History.

Blumentarn, this distinctive pattern served as the primary field uniform for the armed forces of the early East German state for nearly a decade.

The combat suit entered service in 1958 with the NVA’s land forces and Ministerium des Innern formations, including the Deutsche Grenzpolizei (pre-Grenztruppen border guards). Regulations from 1959–1960 confirm its issue, as a two-piece Kampfanzug to be worn over service uniforms.

Uniforms in Blumentarn were used by both the army on the frontlines of potential NATO conflict and the border guards patrolling the near German Border.

The Flächentarnmuster extended across a full soldier system, including:

  • Combat suit (Tarnjacke with hood, Tarnhose).
  • Zeltbahnen (shelter-halves).
  • M56 helmet covers.
  • Magazine pouches.
  • Gas mask bags.
  • Rucksacks and assault packs.

From 1965 onward, the NVA adopted Strichtarn (Kampfanzug 64). Though use of Flächentarn continued in parallel until around 1971.

Characteristics.

NVA issued M58 Flächentarnmuster field pants in great, wearable condition, slightly dusted at the knees but no tears and all buttons present. A solid pick for Warsaw Pact collectors, camouflage enthusiasts, or anyone who wants old and rare piece of East German Cold War surplus.

They feature the classic service cut and functional military details (button-up fly, adjustable waist, button-adjustable ankle tabs, multiple cargo/front pockets, reinforced knee area).

Condition:

  • Genuine NVA surplus.
  • Great overall condition for a issued piece.
  • Light dusting/soiling on the knees (visible but not structural).
  • No tears, no repairs needed, and all original buttons intact.
  • Deep, button-secured cargo pockets, practical enough for tools and elegant enough for the street.

Size & fit

  • G 52, Extra Large/Regular; waist 54,5cm, inseam length 76,5cm.
If you’re between sizes or prefer a specific fit, measure a pair of trousers you own and compare to the above ranges.

Why grab these:

  • Authentic NVA history, collectible but still fully usable.
  • Sturdy military tailoring and practical pockets make them great for rugged everyday wear or costume/reenactment. They don't make them like this anymore...

Tips:

  • Machine wash gentle or hand wash; air dry to preserve the fabric and original trim, don't bleach, don't put in a dryer.
  • Could be cool with 'workwear-style' with boots and a heavy jacket, or dress them down with trainers and a plain tee.
